The 2008 Victorian Sand Greens Championships in July were distinguished by several significant celebrations.
First, the host club at Maldon was celebrating its 100th anniversary and the course, which only operates during these winter months, was in first rate condition for the event.
A field of 107 entrants competed for the trophy over 36 holes played over the weekend. The Clubhouse at Maldon was jam-packed for the presentations.
Though no newcomer to the Victorian Sand Greens Championships, it was the first state Sand Greens title for Chris Tatt, the 2008 Buninyong Golf Club champion, whose other success at Sand Greens was in the Australian Championships in 1995.
For Chris Tatt, it was also a return to Maldon where, as a lad of 10 years old, he swung his first golf club, starting an amateur career that has led to state and national representation around Australia and internationally.
Chris took just six golf clubs with him on his journey this weekend: a 2, 6, 8, 9, driver and putter. In winning the 2008 title, he shot 5 under for the Championships, setting a new record of 61 for the par 65 Maldon course.
Hot on the heels of Chris Tatt was his nephew, Ben Tatt from Belvoir Park Golf Club who was runner-up.
Another five members of the Tatt family were also competing, including Travis Tatt, son of Chris and the 2006 Victorian Sand Greens Championships winner. So, Chris and Travis Tatt now have another honour in being the first father and son golfers to have won the Victorian Sand Greens Championships.
